We moved cross-country from Los Angeles to CT. We used 2 different movers (JK and Zippy Shell pods) for the first 2 critical huge loads and were not happy. For our 3rd most critical load, I found Shleppers after a LONG search. Now I had to ship my huge collection of antique guitars and instruments. These could NOT endure rough handling or see extreme heat. And I would NOT let them be handled more than once on each end (only a 26’ shuttle truck and fit at both our locations, so it was on and off into a semi in-between with the other moves). We had spent 2 years researching this, including temperature-controlled trucks (an impossible quest that most people needn’t worry about). We looked into piano mover and fine arts shippers, but at the end, had NO ONE (even though I packed everything myself in road cases on wheels and heavy cardboard and wood crates). I eventually found Shleppers, choosing them out of many others. EVERY mover seems to have terrible reviews (assume short 5 stars are fake.). but Shleppers did not. I still was not satisfied (they were promising a refrigerated truck) and so negotiated everything with Jesse the owner. In 2 weeks, the crew showed up exactly as promised. Jesse was determined to take care of me coast-to-coast and sent (on his own dime) SIX packers/movers. This was a local crew, as Shleppers is based in the L.A. area. The crews names’ were Rodolfo (foreman), Jeffrey, Hugo, Jose, Lupe and Christian – all super courteous. They could easily communicate, follow directions, etc. They spent a couple hours wrapping and moving the few heavy pieces of furniture and oddball stuff and staging out on lawn. However, when the truck showed up, IT WAS NOT THE REFRIGERATED TRUCK WE WERE PROMISED. I went nuts and spent an hour on the phone with Jesse. Long story short, his dispatcher had carelessly quoted him a semi size refer truck, then at last minute (realizing his mistake) switched to a “vented truck,” then didn’t even send THAT (he got a huge chewing out). We decided to wait until the current heat wave had lessened and Jesse agreed to throw in for same price a second driver, so that a standard 26’ truck would go as direct as possible in 3 days (in the end it took 3 and a half). They would go the more northern route and driving at night would equalize the temp of driving during the day. This allowed me to sleep at night, knowing the instruments would not see extreme temps. The same crew came back a week later (everything was already packed). The driver who volunteered for the route (through Jesse’s dispatcher) was a wonderful young guy who owned his own 1-year-old air-ride truck. (THAT really helped with the vibration of fragile harps, etc.). The crew “tetris’d” everything with my guidance into the truck tightly and safely. Very experienced and clever BUT definitely needed my direction. They almost tied off the final end inadequately; I had them use a giant 3-ply cardboard floor-to-ceiling wall, extra padding and the heavy straps. Behind this was empty 3 feet of space for dolly and handtruck. Jesse got daily updates from his dispatcher. The original truck arrived on the 4th morning, while a new crew out of NJ from the place Jesse uses met them at my home. This crew was 3 guys, not as good as L.A. crew, but fine as long as I gave them specific direction (which they were happy to get). When we rolled up the door to the truck, EVERYTHING LOOKED EXACTLY THE SAME. As we unloaded, I saw that NOTHING HAD SHIFTED IN TRUCK. Compared to our first 2 moves, this was a miracle. Afterwards, I unpacked all the instruments and everything looks good. I threw a dart at a board full of terrible, scary options. NO TWO moving companies gave me the same information. I ultimately “went with my gut” and lucked out. Jesse and Shleppers team totally took care of me, knowing this move had to be right. And we each learned from the experience. As a female I felt verbally and financially attacked do not go with this company! They expect you to know exactly your move capacity as if your profession is moving; otherwise, you get blindsided and charged more than double the quote. After I got charged an astronomical rate the movers told me to give them a good rating or a tip. Today, I’m receiving my stuff and the guy that came here came alone and I had to wait quite some time for the other movers to arrive. I had to enlist the help of my apartment manager to convince him over about 30 mins to park in the proper place. He said he needed the check immediately once I showed it to him and being that he was so difficult I was reluctant to give it to him. I told him I thought it was upon delivery and he said no, so I called HQ. Some guy called me back and when I asked him where it stated that he told me it was in the terms and conditions. I asked him if he could direct me to it and he got condescending and rude telling me I needed to wait until business hours and he can charge me more if I do. No concern that I had to wait an hour for people to show up and why would I be charged more for asking a question. This was a cross country move. There should be someone available during moving hours if this is the service you say you provide. In addition, to all of the chaos I just mentioned, I have several crushed boxes and damage due to improper handling on the transfer. Don’t use them for cross country moves. We paid up front for the whole move plus a tip (they only ask 1/2 at pickup and 1/2 at drop off). On day 2 I called to ask for an eta and Jessie advised it would be most likely be Friday or Saturday (day 3 & 4) before it was shipped. When I called on day 3 to get another eta of shipment Joan said that it could take up to 21 days to ship and she didn’t understand why I was so confused on why it was going to be up to 21 days to ship. I would have honestly chosen another moving company had Erica been truthful and not tried to hide the it can take up to 21 days to ship and then 1-5 days after it was shipped. When it did arrive (day 7) the 2 movers were in a small moving van and it was clearly not a shared move (I am not complaining it was just interesting to me since they were adamant that they were trying to get multiple moves on one trip. One of the men, he took the lead; was a little weird about everything and got frustrated with the other guy when he was trying to put together stuff the other movers took apart (our couch, bed, etc). When they finished I signed the paper and he said, “thanks for your business we accept a tip” I had already tipped and paid so I was a little thrown off as the tone was more like where is our tip. They left and my husband went outside to go to work and he asked my husband if the tip we gave was for them too. My husband told him yes it was, and he seemed frustrated. Anyways two lamps were broken, and a lot of our boxes came smushed and ripped, making them not reusable. Two boxes marked fragile where at the bottom of the pile as well. When they finished I signed the paper and he said, “thanks for your business we accept a tip” I had already tipped and paid so I was a little thrown off as the tone was more like where is our tip. Our experience started off good with Erica who gave me a quote for our move and advised it would be 1-5 days for delivery since it was a long distance move. They had the best quote at the time and Erica was friendly so I put a deposit down. The day of our move the 3 men were very nice and professional, and took extra care to wrap our items. We paid up front for the whole move plus a tip (they only ask 1/2 at pickup and 1/2 at drop off). On day 2 I called to ask for an eta and Jessie advised it would be most likely be Friday or Saturday (day 3 & 4) before it was shipped. When I called on day 3 to get another eta of shipment Joan said that it could take up to 21 days to ship and she didn’t understand why I was so confused on why it was going to be up to 21 days to ship. I would have honestly chosen another moving company had Erica been truthful and not tried to hide the it can take up to 21 days to ship and then 1-5 days after it was shipped. When it did arrive (day 7) the 2 movers were in a small moving van and it was clearly not a shared move (I am not complaining it was just interesting to me since they were adamant that they were trying to get multiple moves on one trip. One of the men, he took the lead; was a little weird about everything and got frustrated with the other guy when he was trying to put together stuff the other movers took apart (our couch, bed, etc).
