John is so professional, knowledgeable, and helpful to work with during my packing process to the final day of the move. Without John's help I don't think I could have gotten to Arizona! I would give John and his moving crew headed by Isael 10 Stars if possible. Israel and his guys were so helpful, efficient, careful, and kind. The good: I heard about this moving company through YouTuber Jenn Im. This was my first time hiring movers. I am glad I did because the summers are hot and my pregnancy made it hard to move heavy things. I hired Northstar to move the contents of my 2 bedroom apartment from SoCal to a storage site in NorCal. The total cost was a little over $4k. First, you do a virtual inspection where an agent counts all of your items and calculates how much it would cost. They wrap your items with plastic wrap for you and include boxes without extra cost. They also assemble/disassemble without an added cost. They wrap couches and furniture in blankets to bring to your destination but it costs $10/each if you want to keep it. I ended up keeping 16 of them for an extra $160. I tipped each mover/driver $30-50 each for their hard work. The process to unload my stuff into the storage unit only took 1 hour and they were able to stack & fit everything into a 10' x 10' unit. I was thrilled I was able to save money on the storage site by downgrading from my original 10' x 14'. The bad: The process to move the stuff out took longer than I expected. I stayed around the whole time because I had nowhere else to go but it took around 5 hours (we had 2 king beds, 2 dressers, 3 nightstands, dining table, 6 chairs, 2 stools, 1 office chair, art, mirrors, a 6-piece sectional couch, shelf, and around 8 boxes of random things). The interesting: You have to pay by cash or money order. You pay the 1st half during the move out and then the remainder during the shipment of the stuff. It's been a week since our move and we're still talking about what a great job our NorthStar team did to make our move easy and painless. They showed up on time, and jumped in like masters. They carefully wrapped and packaged our furniture beyond anything we've seen before and safely transported to our new flat. That earns them 3 stars. But they get 5 stars for the heroic way they managed to squeeze our furniture through tiny doorways, around corners, and up stairs. Many times, it looked impossible but they found ways to get an extra inch here and there. They never gave up. Others would have taken the safe way, left our couch on the sidewalk and told us to buy a new one. Not our NorthStar team. They finished the job and saved us a lot of time and money. It was left incomplete, unfortunately. 2/ I requested the moving team to discard a bed, couch, 3 side tables and one small desk. Despite explicit instruction, some stuff was left in my apartment's corridor, some stuff left downstairs by the recycle area of my apartment building. This led to some heartburn, some lifting and moving on my part, and a fee charged by my apartment building for recycling. 3/ The side tables were left in my apartment corridor (photos attached).The move team left without letting me know that they were leaving, and without completing the job. I'd assumed they'd be back, and waited, only to find out 30 mins later that they had already left. I called them and they mentioned they'd come back for the tables, but an hour after that, they didn't pick up my call. They also left several of their packing materials at home. The move was not complete from my perspective. Two more important notes: - The packing crew told us that if the move isn't completed in a designated timeframe, they don't get paid for the extra time. Example of a bad incentive structure in place that can hurt customers. - Their support team, while friendly and understanding of the issues, were generally unresponsive to all email comms and never resolved issues. - When I got my stuff back from storage, the crew showed me a piece of paper (internal email) indicating that I was a "Do Not Book" client. This was surprising and unprofessional. Customers aren't complaining for fun, it's for specific issues and NorthStar would be much better off resolving them directly. A big kudos and thank you to Marlon and his amazing team (Caleb, Alejandro, Rodolfo, Agustin, and Max) for successfully moving us from our 4K to 6K home this weekend! We lived on a very steep downhill driveway with steep upward stairs off of a steep upward curvy busy road. The team patiently and diligently packed our belongings into a 30' truck + another uHaul literally for 8 hrs, shuttling the uHaul between the 30 footer and our home till dark. They returned bright and early morning to deliver our things and worked another 8 hr shift so patiently! And that's after strategically getting the long heavy truck through a tightest turn into our steep road! Don't work with NorthStar movers. I've moved 9 times in the last 11 years. NorthStar Bay Area moved me from San Jose to Austin and I have to say that it has been the worst experience of them all. The crew: careless, reckless, absolutely out of control. I gave them very specific instructions on what to pack and what to be careful with but the manager didn't take notes nor care to ask any questions during the packing days. He did whatever he remembered (or so he thought)....the result, they didn't pack things that they should've and packed other ones that they shouldn't have. They broke and damaged several pieces of furniture and left behind (in California) a few boxes with utensils, silverware, and other things. The management: absolutely terrible. They have no sense of customer support. In particular Julie Traurig (LA) and Jason Gonzalez (SF) I specifically told them that I needed my things in Texas by no earlier than Sept 15 - they confirm that they would hold the shipment to make sure the things did not arrive before my house was ready (of course I would pay an additional storage fee for this). They forgot about this request and shipped my belongings on August 27....they forced me to put my things in a storage unit and didn't even accepted that they had made a mistake. The NorthStar team was great! They moved me out of my studio apartment in about an hour and 15 minutes, packing included! I really liked how the labeled my packed boxes (tv, kitchen, living room) to make everything easy to find when I start to unpack. They were very professional and gentle with my furniture, including bringing it up 2 narrow / older flights of stairs at my new place. They were diligent in making sure everything I wanted to come with me made it into the truck, and making sure everything was where I wanted it in my new place. I messaged a few different moving companies for moving quotes as I only had a kitchen and bedroom to move. I usually do my own moving but I didn't have access to a large vehicle and with 2 flights of stairs to consider I decided to call an expert. I spoke with NorthStar and they re-assured me that they secure all my items, have insurance and even provide a clothing wardrobe to move all my items hanging in the closets. There was a cheaper company I was considering but the reviews on Yelp seemed pretty harsh and there was was a good amount of good and bad so I decided not take any chances. I don't own expensive items but I didn't want a broken or cracked item. NorthStar was really patient about earning my business. They were great about explaining all the costs and giving me an estimate with all the costs involved. I was grateful that they were able to get the job done in the time I estimated and there was no hidden fees. They had a 2 hour minimum which included drive time so I had planned to move all the large items I was unable to carry myself and could not fit in my car at the time and had planned to move all the smaller items through the week myself. They showed up on time and the movers were really professional. All my items were wrapped and padded if necessary and everything carried out safely and quickly. I was shocked at how fast they did it and with such ease. They seriously are professionals. Since they were able to do it so quickly, they asked if I needed help moving some of my kitchenware. I hadn't planned for it assuming the two hours that I had hired them, included drive time wouldn't give me enough time to move other things so I didn't pack too many other things. They reassured me they could help and brought in boxes and paper for any glassware and packed up all my dishes and other miscellaneous kitchen items. They helped me label the boxes and lay everything out in my new place. This was seriously the best thing ever! Best part was they didn't need to take all the drawers out of the dresser they just moved it as is after wrapping and my bed was completely wrapped and protected. I've moved 3 times in since I've moved to SF and this was seriously the easiest move ever. No sweating, bumping into things and or multiple trips. The wardrobe boxes were great. I didn't have to unhang any of my clothes or worry about wrinkles. It went straight on to the rack at my new place and they disassembled my bed frame and re-assembled my bed frame. They reassured me they could help and brought in boxes and paper for any glassware and packed up all my dishes and other miscellaneous kitchen items. They helped me label the boxes and lay everything out in my new place. This was seriously the best thing ever! Best part was they didn't need to take all the drawers out of the dresser they just moved it as is after wrapping and my bed was completely wrapped and protected. I've moved 3 times in since I've moved to SF and this was seriously the easiest move ever. No sweating, bumping into things and or multiple trips. The wardrobe boxes were great. My friend had referred me to this moving company, since she had a great experience a few months ago. I'm glad she referred me - NorthStar was great! I was able to get an appointment about a week before I moved. It was helpful they had availability so soon ahead of time. Also, they have another option to view your home ahead of time, to estimate how much time it will take, and they'll mark the maximum time not to exceed. They were prompt and on time. I would say there was some confusion about the time starting. Initially when I first called, the office lady said I'd have the 12-6pm slot. This was a little nerve racking for us, since our estimated time of move was going to be a max of 7.5 hours! And our condo has a moving time slot of only 4 hours. Then my fiancé called, they said they'd come earlier, 11am. Then the day before, 9am. Then a few hours before, 8:30! I mean in the grand scheme of things it worked out okay, but just a lack of communication. There was no way to confirm what they initially said, since it didn't say on the estimated sheet. Oh well. They were extremely quick to move. With a large sofa, small sofa, dining room table, 4 chairs, tv stand, queen bed + mattress, desk, another tv stand, 2 trunks, and what felt like 40 boxes, it only took them 2 hrs 15 mins to move down 2 flights of stairs!!!! (With 3 guys). Also they have closet hanger boxes, so that helps. They also have large blankets to cover the sofa, large furniture, and wrap as part of their service! So awesome. When you move into your new place, they take down all the wrapping and also ask where you want to place things, so have an idea ahead of time. Total time was 5.5 hours. Total bill was $800. I would not recommend NorthStar for a long distance move. I've moved long distance three times, and this is by far the worst experience I've had. The only positive part about my experience was the pick up. The team was professional and packed my items with care. The delivery experience, however, was an absolute nightmare. Toward the end of my 3 week delivery window, I received a call on a Monday evening at 9:30pm EST from a gentleman who hardly spoke English. Not expecting a call from an unknown number, I hung up. I then received a text message saying "This moving guys. We bring your stuff tomorrow between 4 and 6. Thanks." Um are you kidding me? I called the gentleman back (yes, at 9:45pm) and asked for more information. He informed me he would be coming the next day in his 18-wheeler. I told him that would not be possible at my delivery location, and he would have to bring a smaller truck. He told me that would not be a problem, but I would have to incur an additional $600 fee for a smaller shuttle truck. I couldn't believe it. I was absolutely flabbergasted. I looked back at my receipt and saw that there is a fee for requiring a shuttle truck, but it was only $275. The next morning, I received a call that they could not in fact come that day and would have to come on Wednesday. At this point, I had reserved my building's loading dock and elevator. To add insult to injury, I had to cancel a work trip in order to be present for my delivery. Talk about inconveniencing me. On Wednesday, when they arrived (they did arrive on time, I'll give them that), I was shocked to find two gentlemen who very well could have been picked up off the street delivering my items. When I was packed, the movers had on branded shirts and looked professional. The lead of the two man team then told me they could not accept credit card as a form of payment even though I had been assured they could. This actually delayed delivery of my items to my apartment by an hour while he took a phone call to inform him that he could, in fact, take a credit card from me. My items were moved in, and a few of my items were broken. Most notably, the leg of my antique desk was torn off somewhere in transport. (see photo) This desk is irreplaceable and the company is no longer in business. Furthermore, the team refused to unroll my rug. I called the moving company multiple times during delivery and the dispatcher, Stephanie, was very pleasant. What was so unfortunate was that these two guys did not follow whatever protocol Northstar has, which caused delays. The process for filing claims on my damaged items was pretty straight forward, but I was disappointed regarding the payment for my desk. In my opinion, the company should pay, in full, for the pick up and restoration of that item. 33 minutes. That's how long it took for NorthStar's 3 man crew to unload every damn thing I own from two moving crates, bring them up multiple flights of stairs, put them in designated areas of my apartment, assemble my bed, set up my TV, and have me sign all the appropriate paperwork. 33 MINUTES. My whole life. Unfolding before my eyes in the same amount of time it takes to watch an episode of The Bernie Mac show and go to the bathroom. It's a little humbling, but a good sign considering my general hoarder tendencies. An impressive feat it was, and it came at an even more impressive price thanks to a handy Yelp Deal they advertise where you pay $60 for $150 worth of service. Def get on that if you decide to go with NorthStar (and you should). I was told there was a minimum amount of time that you pay for (2 hours, I think) and that 30 minutes of that time goes to account for their travel time to your place. In following those rules, I *should* have been charged more money (at least $120 more), but the super cool moving dudes didn't see it that way (plus, I tipped them REALLY well), so they basically left it on a high note saying that the way things worked out, they should actually owe me money. I guess not owning anything of value or quality finally came in handy since the nicest furniture I own is a cat tree followed by everything else made of particle board, which is pretty easy to move, if you're a burly moving dude (apparently). Setting up my move with Northstar (Lynn was my very helpful NorthStar agent) was easy peasy and I got lucky in being able to do it on less that 24-hours notice. The guys came right on time (like, they were supposed to arrive between 3:30 and 4:30 and they were there at 3:29) and were pros to every extent, including parking their MASSIVE truck on one the steepest hills I've ever seen. No joke, it was borderline jackknife situation. The day after my move, Lynn from NorthStar called to make sure everything had gone well, and said my 3 moving men had asked her send some extra thanks my way for my generous tip, which was really nice to hear.
