Noyes Sr. establishes Earle W. Noyes & Sons by purchasing a second hand REO Speedwagon with $5.00 left over for working capital. He began the business by meeting trains at Union Station and delivering steamer trunks to homes and cottages in Southern Maine. He soon added household goods to his core business, relocating families in Maine and New England. His first warehouse was the basement of his home in the East Deering neighborhood of Portland Maine. 1947 Earle W. Noyes & Sons becomes a founding stockholding agent of United Van Lines. United started as a return load service for local agents. 1951 Earle’s son, Lester, joins the business as a van operator and warehouse manager. 1971 The company builds a 50,000 sf. warehouse and office complex at the corner of Franklin and Oxford Streets in Portland, Maine. Earle W. Noyes & Sons introduced high bay palletized storage to Maine with this modern fireproof and heated facility. 1976 Lester becomes president of Earle W. Noyes & Sons. 1977 Lester’s son, Peter, joins the company after graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in Transportation Administration. 1986 Noyes purchases the former Atlantic & Pacific Warehouse in Portland and enters the general freight business. Non-perishable freight items are received by rail car and distributed by truck. 1987 Peter becomes president of the company. Lester becomes Noyes’s chairman of Earle W. Noyes & Sons and is elected to the Board of Directors of United Van Lines. 1989 Lester is re-elected to the Board of Directors of United Van Lines. 1990 Noyes Self Storage is founded after converting the Atlantic & Pacific Warehouse. This is a three story heated brick building featuring inside loading docks and three freight elevators. 1991 Lester is re-elected to the Board of Directors of United Van Lines for a final two year term. 1992 United Van Lines becomes the moving industry’s revenue leader. 1993 Noyes Self Storage adds seasonal car storage. 2001 Noyes doubles the size of its storage facility, adding 50,000sf. of space. 2002 Earle W. Noyes & Sons is voted Greater Portland’s Best Moving and Storage Company by Marketing Surveys of America. 2005 Peter’s son, William, joins the company after graduating from the University of Denver with a degree in Business. 2008 William becomes Operations Manager of Earle W. Noyes & Sons and Noyes Self Storage. 2009 Noyes receives the Family Business of the Year Award in the large-business category presented by the Institute for Family-Owned Businesses. Noyes receives the coveted President’s Quality Award from United Van Lines. 2011 Peter Noyes elected to the UniGroup Board of Directors. UniGroup is the parent company of United Van Lines. William Noyes appointed to the Digital Media focus group by Unigroup. 2012 John Backman joins the Noyes Team as Vice President of Commercial Services. Peter’s son, Brent, joins the company after graduating from Boston College with a degree in English and Vermont Law School with a JD and a Masters in Environmental Law. 2014 Peter is re-elected to the Unigroup Board of Directors. 2016 Peter is re-elected to the Unigroup Board of Directors for a final two year term. 2017 William Noyes is promoted to Executive Vice President. Brent Noyes is promoted to Vice President of Operations. 2019 Al Graffam is appointed Operations Manager and Local Dispatcher. Noyes Self Storage replaces an original elevator with a new state of the art hydraulic elevator. 2020 Noyes Self Storage replaces a second elevator. Earle W. Noyes & Sons adapts to virtual surveys and other safety protocols in response to the Coronavirus pandemic.
