I had a wonderful experience with Careful Movers recently. First, Mat provided me with a detailed cost estimate breakdown. Next, a few days before the move, Carlos the dispatcher walked me through, point by point, what to expect during the move. This review is long overdue. I engaged the company to help us pack and move and requested that they also move my many indoor / outdoor plants. We agreed on the date but I managed to mark the wrong day on my calendar. I was surprised to get a call to go over details a day earlier than what my calendar was telling me, but thankfully, they were very accommodating and rescheduled to give us more time to preparer. At that point, I already knew I was in good hands. On the day of packing, Jose and his crew arrived on time and worked with ease / care, wrapping /preparing our household stuff for move. By the end of the day, they moved my plants. This way they would be able to clean up the truck that night of any plant debris for the next day. On the second day, Jose and his team worked around the clock loading, unloading, unpacking and placing the furniture or boxes where we wanted them. They put the rugs down and helped us finesse the furniture placement. They also place our boxes in preassigned locations. If they were unsure about an item, they would ask. It was really nice in the following weeks as we were unpacking to find all the boxes in the marked rooms and not to have to move anything around. Careful movers were amazing to work with! Jesus, Luis & Aaron came out last week to help me move apartments to another nearby one- neither location was easy to work with, the place I was moving out of required carrying everything across a pond and the new location had a long steel set of stairs to get down to its i was blown away by how quickly they were able to move everything, and yet with so much care. They wrapped each piece of furniture thoroughly before moving and everything arrived in the same condition as it was before the move. They took the bed apart to move it and put it back together afterward, super efficiently. I'd booked for 3 hours hoping to get through just my largest furniture items, since I figured I could do the rest myself- but Aaron, Luis & Jesus were so fast that there was enough time to have them also move several other pieces of furniture and a ton of boxes- far above and beyond what I hoped we'd get through in those three hours. The cost was also exactly what I was quoted when I spoke with them on the phone to schedule, no hidden extra fees or anything. I had a positive experience with Careful Movers This was going to be my first ever big move and I was really nervous, but after doing weeks of research, and meeting with multiple other moving companies, I picked Careful Movers and couldn't be happier with my decision My main point of contact was Ruben who was ready for any and all questions I had, and boy!!! did I have a lot. I appreciate all of his reassurances as it was going to be my first big move and I was very nervous just about everything, additionally I also had very specific and special requests as I had multiple destinations, but the team was very receptive and assured me it was no problem and at no additional cost! After we got the details down on the phone and virtually, we did a virtual tour of all my packed items and furnitures. Had a minor snaffu here as Ruben let me know that I had to empty out our packed plastic drawers as part of their policy is to move only empty furnitures. No problem here as we still had a bit of time to repack a few things. This is why virtual tour is important! Afterwards, had contact with Joel to reconfirm everything for the team to come out on Saturday morning 8-9am. Then it was a matter of waiting until game day Aaron contacted me bright and early on Saturday 7:45 to give me their ETA and they arrived promptly at 8:15. It was a pretty gloomy day with impending rain, but the team moved so fast we avoided getting any rain on any item! The team was Aaron, Edwin, and Fernando, and never had I seen people move so fast while carrying boxes. I was so worried they wouldn't be able to handle the heavier boxes, but they handled them all so swiftly and carefully. They wrapped up all furnitures with moving blankets, big cerrain wrap looking plastics and sometimes pad with even more cardboards. Dismounted our big TV no problem, and put it into way more protective layer than when we first purchased it! The only difficulty they ran into was the treadmill they had to take down a flight of stairs that was really, really, really tight, around two shoulders width, so understandably there were some minor damages to the walls. Nothing a bit of paint can't fix. Then we parted ways as each of us had to make our long distance drive of almost 400miles. Aaron contacted me in the evening to let me know they arrived safely and will be ready to unload by 8:30AM the next day. I love how prompt and communicative he is in the steps and next steps, so I was never left wondering what's going to happen next. Only Aaron and Edwin arrived for the unloading but they were more than enough. Both continue to be professional and proactively offered me if we wanted floor runners to protect our floor (we did) and proceeded to unload all of the stuff in such an orderly fashion! We directed them to put all of our boxes in our garage so we could take our time to unpack, and they organized everything to make sure all boxes are accessible by making a clear path to them, and made sure to not stack the boxes too high so we could open everything at our waist level comfortably. Careful Movers was recommended to me by a friend --- because her friend gushed about what a good service they provide. I used their moving service and their junk removal service partner. I did not use their packing services --- after my move I wish I had. So, the moving service is very automated in terms of how they quote and communicate. You speak to a person to receive a quote. My move was small, so no one came out to actually view my home. The move was within the state of California. Honestly, the quote was higher for me but the circumstances made it acceptable. The interactions with the people and the automation of the scheduling were really well done. They have it down to a process and it shows. The bottom line is the company communicates well both people to people and via the software. The moving team themselves were lovely. They wore masks at all times in my home. The team was efficient and careful and communicated well. All very important. At one point, I asked them to pay special attention to a 20 yo cactus I had. It had grown back after being accidentally broken in my last move. The guys were great and fun and wonderful! Bottom line. This is a good team inside and outside of the front office. The Careful Movers team was wonderful from start to finish. From my first call for an estimate to final details when moving in, everything was done professionally and accurately. They wrapped and moved all furniture from our four bedroom house as well as loaded the boxes we packed. Then they met us the next day as we moved three hours away. My family and I used careful movers to do a move from Menlo Park to the north bay. Saying this was a huge mistake would be an understatement. It started with Christian, the salesman who quoted us an amount that ended up being more than double just to move our stuff into storage which was confusing to begin with. We thought the total quote from Christian to move our furniture from our 4 bedroom house was $3700 which was actually just to move our stuff into their storage unit. That portion of the move ended up being nearly triple what they had quoted (between $8000 and $9000). Anthony felt that to compensate for being so grossly overcharged, he dropped a few items off at another location in San Francisco for us and said the storage would be free. Apparently the storage was supposed to be around $1700 which we did not see in the contract. This was just to get our furniture into their storage unit. The crew that came that day was awful. Once it's in their "vault", dealing with Anthony felt like dealing with an organized crime boss. He told us how much it would cost to move it up to the new location and if we wanted to hire a new company to pick up our furniture from their wear house, we would be charged by careful movers again for unwrapping all of our stuff and it would be an estimate. Anthony would say things over the phone and then put into writing something different. There was no trust that I nor my family had with Anthony. The stress levels I experienced in dealing with Anthony and careful movers was unlike anything I'd experienced in a long time. Many items were broken by the first crew and many items such as bolts to the furniture were lost. I can say that there was a second crew that was very professional that did the move from their storage facility to the north bay and in my opinion, they should be the ones running the company. They were genuine, hard working individuals and deserved to be recognized as such. Terrible experience. Furniture which was deemed fragile and required special "crating charges" was damaged and subsequently not covered. Movers dumped things into boxes carelessly, moved entire drawers without wrapping contents causing drawers to spill and items get trapped behind drawers. Movers were not friendly, one was not even working, they told me later he was sick. Toward the end of my move they told me the truck was too full to keep working but when I walked up myself to confirm, the trucks were not full. They tried to stop me from looking telling me I wasn't allowed in the trucks. This company was priced higher than my other quotes and I chose them thinking, you get what you pay for. Not the case. When I raised these issues with the person who quoted my move, he argued, telling me my items were damaged before the move and asked me to prove they weren't. How could I anticipate needing to prove the absence of damage? Why would I document items were fine?! He refused to do anything. Read More

We used Careful Movers for a move recently after seeing them when our old neighbors were moving. Throughout, the company was excellent! I called them to get a quote, and they took an inventory of things that had to be moved and provided an estimate via email. They went over the process - how their team would pack the truck, and the additional charges we can expect. A few days before the move, they called to check if we needed any packing help (we didn't). On the day of the move, the team (Jose, Jose, and Gil) arrived a bit earlier. They came to the apartment and asked what needed to move - we asked them to not move the vacuum cleaner and a lamp, and they remembered that! They rolled carpets to avoid damaging the floor, and wore a mask throughout. All the furniture was carefully packed and moved. Best of all, they stuck to the estimate! This is a continuation of my previous review since the text field filled up previously in the Yelp review page. Around 1 or 2pm, all the packing and loading was done and trucks were ready to go. There was still a little left to pack and move, but we decided to do that on our own afterwards, as we had the time, and better to use the moving crew for the furniture and packed boxes. The driving trip to SF was smooth and quick. We are charged double-time for the driving time, as that's a moving industry standard in CA - makes sense. Unloading at the destination was much faster. The crew was efficient in unloading and bringing in the boxes to the destination rooms. I spent most of the time directing the crew into which room for each item. We had some boxes go into the wrong rooms and had to move them back ourselves, but that was mostly our family's own confusion for not having a solid plan for where to put things yet. The piano was rolled into the family room easily without any problems. Just a small single step to lift that over. The massage chair was the big challenge. It wouldn't fit through the front stairwell! Again, it was originally assembled from 2 heavy, bulky pieces, but we couldn't figure out how to disassemble it or disconnect the air tubes. The crew was helpful to suggest turning it on and reclining the chair to its maximum horizontal position to make it as long and straight as possible. I found our extension cord to bring out to the street to turn it on and reclined it. Then in one big breath, the entire crew of 5 now lifted the chair (about 300 pounds), carried it up the stairwell, in through the entry door, down the hallway, and set it down in the living room in one big carry, where it now sits. I think it will remain here forever with the building as it will take another 5 strong men to carry it out in the future. In the remainder of the unloading, one small but important mishap happened. When setting down one of the bookcases, the moving crew set down the base upside-down (with a metal dowel pointing down instead of up - understandable mistake) and pushed the bookcase toward the wall, creating a big scratch in the hardwood floor. We both noticed it at the time, and we both took a photo of it, to make a claim on it later. In the end, everything was done with about an hour of overtime. The crew went over all the details for the final invoice on an iPad, which I initialed off. The only other small detail to debate later was that 15-minutes of break time was noted to be discounted from the total. I got the final invoice with all the details immediately afterwards which was helpful. Customarily, I also tipped all 5 crew members with a cash tip for their hard work. After about a week or 2, after major mental and emotionally recovery for our family first, I followed up with Careful Movers and gave them some feedback, primarily questioning the break time, and the scratch on the floor. They were polite but said they didn't know what to do. I said simply, How about making some adjustments to the charged amount to accommodate the overcharging and damage? Later it was clarified that the crew were allowed a 30-min unpaid break during the day, but additional breaks (needed) would still go on the clock and be paid by the customer. I was OK with that, but it meant I was overcharged 15-min of break time. That's not much, but when time is charged at $280/hour, it's not negligible. For the floor scratch, I asked them to compensate us for the damage, since basic insurance is part of the moving contract. They clarified that insurance applied to the moved items, and at only 60-cents/pound, not to the house. Still, a scratch on a nice floor is significant damage, so we agreed to have me get a reasonable repair estimate to fix the floor. It took us several weeks to find a willing and able handyman to inspect the floor and provide an estimate and we finally submitted that, and Careful Movers finally closed our case by adjusting our break time and floor damage, so everything is finally closed. The agents on the phone doing the scheduling and customer service were still very politely and willing to fix things appropriately, and that's what happened at the end. We still had a rough moving day with the crew and the confusion with the changed plans, but in the end everything worked out (with another handyman moving the wall cabinet, who did a fantastic job), given several weeks to follow up on the damage estimate details. We learned that moving is a stressful event, and we should always be prepared for anything to happen. Nothing is perfect as is life, but we'll get through it and still be happy in our new place. For the floor scratch, I asked them to compensate us for the damage, since basic insurance is part of the moving contract. They clarified that insurance applied to the moved items, and at only 60-cents/pound, not to the house. Still, a scratch on a nice floor is significant damage, so we agreed to have me get a reasonable repair estimate to fix the floor. It took us several weeks to find a willing and able handyman to inspect the floor and provide an estimate and we finally submitted that, and Careful Movers finally closed our case by adjusting our break time and floor damage, so everything is finally closed. The agents on the phone doing the scheduling and customer service were still very politely and willing to fix things appropriately, and that's what happened at the end. We still had a rough moving day with the crew and the confusion with the changed plans, but in the end everything worked out (with another handyman moving the wall cabinet, who did a fantastic job), given several weeks to follow up on the damage estimate details. This is a continuation of my previous review since the text field filled up previously in the Yelp review page. Around 1 or 2pm, all the packing and loading was done and trucks were ready to go. There was still a little left to pack and move, but we decided to do that on our own afterwards, as we had the time, and better to use the moving crew for the furniture and packed boxes. The driving trip to SF was smooth and quick. We are charged double-time for the driving time, as that's a moving industry standard in CA - makes sense. Unloading at the destination was much faster. The crew was efficient in unloading and bringing in the boxes to the destination rooms. I spent most of the time directing the crew into which room for each item. We had some boxes go into the wrong rooms and had to move them back ourselves, but that was mostly our family's own confusion for not having a solid plan for where to put things yet. The piano was rolled into the family room easily without any problems. Just a small single step to lift that over. The massage chair was the big challenge. It wouldn't fit through the front stairwell! Again, it was originally assembled from 2 heavy, bulky pieces, but we couldn't figure out how to disassemble it or disconnect the air tubes. The crew was helpful to suggest turning it on and reclining the chair to its maximum horizontal position to make it as long and straight as possible. I found our extension cord to bring out to the street to turn it on and reclined it. Then in one big breath, the entire crew of 5 now lifted the chair (about 300 pounds), carried it up the stairwell, in through the entry door, down the hallway, and set it down in the living room in one big carry, where it now sits. My wife and I hired Careful Movers three times: once to unload our moving truck when we moved to California, a second time when we moved from one city to another city in California, and a third time when we moved out of California. I own a 113-yr-old Steinway piano that is notoriously difficult to move (even compared with other pianos). It has a cast-iron frame and the weight distribution is uneven, both top to bottom and front to back. It also has a rounded bottom, which makes it severely difficult to balance while rolling it on a dolly. This is the only moving company which has been able to move this piano with ease. One of the Careful Movers, Enrique, figured out a way to balance the piano on the dolly (using the wheel cups as wedges), and three or four different professional piano movers we had used before him could not figure out how to do this. While previous movers struggled and cursed trying to move it, and constantly had to keep a man or two to hold the piano up, the Careful Movers crew was able to roll it on a dolly as if it was just any old piano. Enrique and his crew fit the piano into a room in our new place that I honestly did not think would be a possibility. I am a little worried that the next moving company we hire (since we are no longer near Careful Movers) will not be as good and won't be able to get it out. There are a few other items we own that were on the difficult side for normal professional moving companies to deal with. Nothing terribly unusual (aside from the piano), but just normal difficult stuff. I think the difference with Careful Movers is that they just look at each piece as a puzzle to solve and come up with a creative way to handle it, and they share their solution with you so that you can have an easier move the next time. That alone is worth something. The quoted estimate was the same as actual cost of each move (no hidden costs). Anthony and his team were great about communicating with me in advance of the move and even fulfilled my request to have the same crew that had moved us before (I only requested this because of the piano), though he was also very clear with me that he couldn't guarantee the same crew. Additionally, they have always been friendly and professional, and this time around were COVID-safe (wearing masks at all times, even though they are doing heavy lifting. There were no scratches or dents in any of our possessions. They always show up on time and are down to business right away. Enrique, EJ, and Juan showed up exactly on time, with masks, and I've never seen a move completed this fast. Careful Movers came through for us in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, and made our move from Redwood City to Watsonville as stress-free as possible. They are very careful with fragile stuff but they broke a spoon and TAPED it. The amount of extra paper they used is ridiculous and it fills 3 medium size boxes. I paid for appliances disconnect and reconnect but they didn't reconnect, that wasn't a nice surprise. They also lost a brand new sous vide. I have them extra tip to get rid of some old shelves and they left one behind a door. They also didn't account for the fridge, garden stuff and one other furniture so it at the end it wouldn't fit, they had to come back and charged me more. They also round up, a lot, on they worked hours and then they try to be nice at compensating the extra hour value but in the end they charged me total one and a half extra hours. I hate moving but these guys made me hate it less. They're competitively priced and one of the few companies that won't make you purchase a parking permit for their truck San Francisco. Tommy, who fielded my initial quote and follow-up booking, was a pleasure, as was the moving crew - Alejandro H, Rico, and Ramon. The crew arrived at exactly 8 AM as planned. In case the name didn't suggest it, they are indeed careful. I especially appreciate that they thought to remove the shelves from our bookshelf before moving it. A previous company didn't do this and they became dislodged in transit which could have caused damage. They also packed up our fragile Apple monitors very nicely, including blankets (!) to pad the glass. Careful Mover are great! At least until I unpacked on the other side of the country. Since I was a kid, every time I moved, with professionals, or a rented truck, there was one rule: Pull the loaded drawers out of your dresser, load the dresser on the truck, put the drawers back in the dresser, then wrap and secure the dresser. Careful has a better way. They scoop out the contents of your drawers, thrown them in boxes, wrap your empty dresser in a blanket and plastic, then load the dresser and boxes on the truck. This almost doubles the size taken by your clothes. You also have to refold everything that had been neatly folded and stored in your dresser before the move. Other than making us spend en extra day+ getting settled in our new home, Careful Movers are great! I'm giving four stars because other wise they were a good moving company. Ours was a relatively short and simple move, 20 minutes drive time between locations and mostly furniture, but we had a lot of delicate stuff - plenty of glass and leather and a few challenging pieces that would not come apart without becoming an ungodly mess. They were earlier than our appointment time but I was going nuts getting things ready, and asked them to wait - no problem. If you've never seen movers who really know what they're doing, well, it's something to behold. Despite the hassle of losing our elevator reservation and having to share it with another move-out at the same time, they never lost their cool. He comes to our apartment, picks up the drawer and takes it to 4 different glass shops until he finds one in Hayward willing to custom make a new glass panel that matches the look of the one he broke (to the tune if about $350 on top of the $100 we had already gotten off the quote). They showed up with 3 guys and a truck and went to town packing that thing to the gills with our stuff. Once we arrived at the new place we realized that in doing so they bent the knob of one of the drawers on our dresser, causing the glass pane to crack and turning our $1000+ pier 1 dresser into a huge eye sore. One of the movers called the office and said they could offer us a $100 discount or see if they could fix it... Pier 1 was not willing to replace the one drawer and said we would have to buy a whole new dresser. Right now you should be asking yourself "how is this a 5 star review?" In steps Artem, one of the owners. He comes to our apartment, picks up the drawer and takes it to 4 different glass shops until he finds one in Hayward willing to custom make a new glass panel that matches the look of the one he broke (to the tune if about $350 on top of the $100 we had already gotten off the quote). Talk about doing the right thing! So we didn't have the smoothest experience but in the end I can do nothing but recommend them as honest, professional and reasonable. Read More

Updated 6/2/2013 The crew was great - they showed up on time for both the packing and moving, and worked hard from beginning to end. They delivered on the key thing I was looking for - make my move less stressful. I've used several moving companies over the years and I would say this was the best crew that I've worked with. I'm not 100% done with unpacking yet, but with a few small exceptions from what I can tell they did a great job packing up our house. I would recommend getting a do-not-exceed estimate rather than going with an over-the-phone verbal estimate. The move ended up costing a little bit more than the initial estimate, but after some follow up discussion we were able to negotiate a reasonable final price. I definitely appreciated the after-the-move followup to my concerns about the estimate. Careful Movers definitely works hard to make sure that they leave customers with a positive experience and I have already had one friend use them based on my recommendation, with similarly positive results.
