To our delight everything they did was top notch, prompt,and personable. My family and I used this company to move from Utah to California in March of 2023. They breached our contract stating when they would start the move and when they would show up at our new house. We were unable to meet them at our new house due to health problems during the trip to our new home. As a result, they put all our belongings where ever they felt like even though we gave them an extremely detailed description of every single item and where it belongs in our new house. They also decided to urinate all over our new bathroom floors. We reached out to management and they said they'll "see what we can do" for compensation. They never compensated us. We were forced to hire local movers to haul our heavy furniture to the correct locations out of our own pocket. The driver and his movers were extremely poor at communicating. They failed to do what the contract stated. They just wanted to dump our belongings as fast as possible and get on with their next job to leech as much money as possible from their clients. American Van Lines gave my move to other company to keep my dates. I should have just said no I'll move my dates. Four guys showed up in a small unmarked truck. One spoke English and knew what he was doing. The other three I think he picked up on a street corner on the way. They were 3 hours late. Started around 2pm once they finalized some errors in the contract. They finished our 4 bedroom move furniture only after 11pm. I have a massive hole above the stairs were they got a dresser stuck. We have 4 damaged pieces of furniture. One that is completely unusable. Wanted to list the house we moved out of, but there is a huge hole that we now have to get repaired. I had to then reach out to my coordinator, leave a voicemail, and wait several business days before I was followed up with. The issue of the additional fee was taken care of. They then called me the week they were picking up my items and asked if they could come 3 days earlier than my scheduled date. I told them no because I still had a lot of packing to finish, but agreed to a date that was 2 days earlier. I then took off of work and waited around for them all day, only to get a call at 7pm to let me know they were not going to make it (well yeah no duh). The pick up process went well and I did not have any issues. The pick up team kept my things organized. However, I later found out upon the delivery of my items, that they folded my $3000 mattress in half and shrunk wrap it. It is now damaged. Once my items were picked up I had to call every week to get a status update, and each time, each person I spoke to had no idea what was going on. This went on for a month. I was then told my items would be delivered on 3 different occasions, all of which I took off of work for. My items were finally delivered 3 days past the original delivery window. And when you have been waiting for over a month and sleeping on an air mattress, that is unacceptable. I was not offered any apology or discount. First, let me tell me you. This is the second review I am writing. I took down the first after speaking with the company on several issues. I was supposed to have received claim forms and never did. This company is the WORST! They called me a little after 5:00pm to tell me then were coming the next day to pick up my stuff. Next day was a Friday. They did this AFTER saying Sunday was okay. When I talked to "Dan", he was quite rude. I asked to speak to a supervisor and his response was "What do you think that will do?" UNBELIEVABLE!! So, my husband and I could only spend 1 hour at a going away party due to us having to come home to pack. Then, at our destination, they called and said they would be there in 1/2 hour. No notice till that. We were out and had to return back to our new home to be there for the delivery! I do have to say, the person on the phone admitted it was her oversight and she credited us $200.00. We have been unpacking here and there and I came across sentimental items that were broken!!! The boxes were labeled correctly and, yet, those were the ones that got crushed!! Hmm, could that be on purpose. A little more info - the day after I posted my first Yelp about this company I received a call from them. The person said they would be sending forms and that they had spoken to "Dan". Also, said "Do you know you can't talk about us? We gave you the $200 credit and it was on the form." Well, NO ONE TOLD ME THAT and there was NO FORM! So the hell with them! Now it is back. I have moved many times throughout my life and this was by far the worst moving experience I have ever had. American Van Lines is unreliable, and unprofessional. There were 3 delays in our pick up date. One day we were rescheduled for, they just didn't show up, and the next day, when they did show up, it was late in the afternoon and it took late into the afternoon the following day to finish the job. When they arrived as they parked the van they ran into and damaged my neighbor's front yard fountain. We had originally been scheduled for a pick up on Friday and we were finally packed up late Tuesday afternoon, delaying our cross country drive (and disrupting all our hotel reservations). The packer did not provide us with the inventory (he had not done it) as he departed saying that our items would be inventoried as they moved our things from the shuttle van to the actual van that would carry things cross country. He promised us a copy as soon as possible. When I didn't receive it, I had to make multiple calls to get it. I was told initially it was lost, then I was sent illegible copies via email. When I asked for the contact information for their mediator I was told they did not have one- that they used their legal department. Again after many calls (informing them were required to provide this information), I was finally provided information for the company that provides arbitration for them (about 6 weeks from my initial request). During our calls I was told things that were later denied. I began to communicate only via email so I had a record of everything they said. I was often informed of how problems were my fault and that somehow I had an unfair advantage in the situation. When the packers finally arrived, they came unprepared, without sufficient packing materials. They asked us twice (despite us paying for them to pack) if we had any blankets that they could wrap our furniture with? Due to lack of paper wrap, they put dozens of framed pictures with glass overlays in a box with none of them wrapped, on top of each other, then set a heavy ceramic statue on top of them all (see photo). Not surprisingly, there was a lot of damage to our things. We had our things in storage before delivery and when we requested delivery we were informed there is a 3 week window to deliver things out of storage- that they do not have to deliver until 3 weeks after the date you request. This resulted in us having to pay duplicate rent for 21 days, not knowing what day within this window they would arrive (We had to pay for both places so we would have a place to stay in case delivery wasn't until the end of the window, and to have a place to deliver our things to in case it was the beginning of the window). We insured fully. They will not pay for a damaged item despite our having photos documenting before and after condition, as we didn't discover and document the damage while the delivery crew was there. We used AVL for our cross country move. They promised they would handle our move knowing they would subcontract it using the excuse that their truck broke down. They almost doubled our cost the day of pickup to over $26,000.00. They required a large deposit that they would not return. AVL was non responsive while our moving nightmare was going on. Our custom made furniture arrived water damaged with the moving blankets stuck to it. No item was spared from some form of damage. Our delivery day was set for a Tuesday but we were contacted the Sunday before at 2:00pm by a very rude, hard to understand man demanding a 4:00pm delivery time that day, and a cash balance payment. We were not home when I explained that would not work and our date was already set, then he started to demand storage fees - we eventually settled on Monday. The two inexperienced men that delivered our belongings did not speak English and damaged many areas of our home. They were at our house over 12 hours unmasked while my husband and I did most of the work and heavy lifting to try and keep the damage to a minimum - these were not professional movers. Many of our belongings never showed up. After many, many calls and emails to the owner (Anthony DeSorbo) I was able to briefly speak with him. All he bothered to say was: "so you had a bad move - file a claim." We did not purchase extra insurance. The claim process is laborious and you might get $.60/lb and then you are not allowed to leave reviews. You lose rights when you place a claim with them. Our couch was destroyed beyond repair and is irreplaceable. The original cost was close to 20k. Why would I waste my time placing a claim for pennies on the dollar and lose my right to share my experience. Many of our destroyed items I could not value because they only had value to us. Personal items that were family heirlooms with no monetary value. This whole situation was so stressful and sad. We had many details that we wished to speak with Anthony about but he would not take the time to meet over zoom or FaceTime. He doesn't want to look you in the eyes. We moved twice across the pond with basically the same inventory, first from CA to London UK in 2018 and then back in CA in 2020 before the pandemic started. I complained about the lack of communication on this with our moving coordinator and she was extremely rude with me and hung up the phone after telling me I was overreacting. Mind that both me and my wife work in costumer service and we were SHOCKED by the way our coordinator handled our move so far. We complained with a supervisor, got a different costumer service representative as a temporary coordinator and we were reassured that our experience was valuable to them. The new guy was nice on the phone there wasnt really much for him to do at that point. They called us multiple times to set up the pick up and delivery locations (NJ to SC), requested an inventory list of all items in the 4 rooms (42 items to include a huge entertainment center & 2 sectional sofas), paid 1/2 down, and they show up in a mini van the Sunday morning of the move and their offices are closed!!!! This company seems to be running a scam! I’m posting a photo of the tiny little van that showed up to pick up our furniture! What a joke, and very unprofessional!!! Then the driver has the nerve to tell us they had no idea the amount of furniture we were moving and a larger van is going to cost more money! Apparently their office didn’t share the complete itemized list we gave them! *update: the manager called me several times to remove this review, harassed me until I finally blocked his number, so he started calling my husband to harass him to get me to remove my review! Their office is closed on a Monday? "Ashley" informed me in a text that their office was closed on Monday. I asked them to call me after 12:30 the next day and I get several calls and voice mails and two texts from Ashley between 12:30-1:00 asking me why I wasn't available for our "scheduled" phone call?? I answered their call and was forwarded to someone who asked why I called? Seriously? I should have terminated the call right there. Instead I talked to "Kyle" who insisted on knowing what I needed moving, the sizes of everything even though I wasn't on the property and told him so AND that I wasn't going to be at the property for a few weeks AND that the move wasn't going to be until April. I also told Kyle that I was talking to two other moving companies and then I would be back in touch with him after the new year. Three days and 30 emails later, most of which were demands to know why I haven't signed my contract and why I haven't responded to them. I'm done with this company. Don't Let THIS Happen to You! AVL will give you a low-ball "Binding Estimate", but on move day, they will void the contract and come up with a NEW price. Keep reading for details. So, my mother was working directly with a sales person for months at AVL (James Coleman) and he instructed her to send him a list of items in the home. She asked him if he was planning to send an estimator to do a walkthrough in the house and he said that "they don't do that". She asked if he wanted photos sent and he said "not necessary". So she sent a list of the big items in the home, mostly furniture , and he said this was sufficient and gave her a quote. He explained that the Binding Estimate is the final price, it would not change with weight. We were locked in. So we thought. Moving week arrived and we were given a 3-day window when we should expect the truck to arrive. It never did. It's very difficult to get ahold of anybody who can actually help you at AVL but we finally spoke to Rita who manages the dispatch. Rita explained that they didn't have a truck and the NEW date is two days from now. We were selling the home so now in violation of escrow but luckily worked with the agent and buyer to give us two more days. Rita also promised a $100 credit per "day late" but of course we were never given that credit. We thought the worst was over but not even close. Moving day arrived and the truck was on time. The moving manager spent two hours walking through the home writing a detailed list of every small item in the home. He said that he was going to send this list to AVL and they would send us a "revised estimate". Really? What happened to our BINDING guarantee? Liz Edgar called from AVL and (surprise surprise) has a NEW PRICE due to all the small items they failed to ask for during the initial bid. Things like a coffee maker, dishes, a small box fan, garden tools... just things you would expect a home to have. We were NEVER told that they needed this level of detail. So, here we are, already past the escrow date and we absolutely have to be moved today, and Liz gives us a price that is MORE THAN DOUBLE the original "binding estimate". After quite a bit of arguing Liz stated that "We can honor the original binding contract but we will only move the items listed on that contract. But if you want everything moved, you have to sign the new (double price) contract. Choice is yours." And that's the scam. They had us up against the wall, with really no choice but to accept this new price, which could be anything they want. In my opinion, AVL has very suspect business practices. I can't say for sure that AVL planned this all along, or that they never intended to honor the original contract, but that's how it seems to me. We got a good quote from American Van Lines so we paid the deposit and prepared to move. When movers showed up we were surprised that they were a contracted out moving company. Once everything was on the truck we were told our final fee had to be paid now in cash, cashapp or zelle. Well unfortunately for us it was Saturday. Our bank does not use those apps and there is a cap on cash withdrawal. We called American van lines to fidgure things out. That's when they told us the contracted companies have there on rules. F&F & big d's moving company policy was cash first. When the truck showed up at our new location. First we didnt realize the truck was ours because it was a different truck.With different movers. We were not told our stuff was going to be put on another truck. During our drive we called the previous drivers for eta's. We spoke with 2 people. No one told us anything! We moved across country in June from Denver to Atlanta and used American Van Lines. We have have moved across country 3 times and have never experienced anything like this move. Our packers arrived on 6/9 and were hours late. On 6/10, the loaders arrived and had to pack the remainder of the items that the packers decided not to pack. The moving truck was scheduled to depart on 6/10 and did not arrive for 3 more days. No one would return any calls. We had to cancel flights and stay in hotel and extend rental car. We were without everything with 2 young children. On 7/2, only half of our belongings arrived and damaged. We were told, they would not honor the $100 late refund because we received "essential items" but did not include dishes, sheets, etc. We had to purchase sheets just to sleep in the beds along with plates and cups. The remainder of our items finally were delivered on 7/21. So from 6/10-7/21 we were without our belongings. Once it arrived all of our dishes were broken, furniture damaged and broken and other things just never arrived. We also received items from another family. We hired American Vanlines for a cross country move. I checked their rating, and it was ok. However, a few days before the move, we got a call from our moving coordinator telling us that the truck that was scheduled to move us broke, and they are subcontracting our move to Cal Vanlines. (Please note that several earlier reviewers had the same experience!). I checked the ratings for Cal Vanlines, and they were very low; clearly not the same level of service that I signed up for with American Van lines. I raised these concerns with our American Van lines moving coordinator, and she said that they have a right to subcontract given the small print in the contract and assured me that Cal Vanlines is ok. (Clearly, American Van lines needs to read the reviews for Cal Van lines and stop using them!). I asked what if I want my move to be done by American Vanlines, and she said I'd have to wait 2 or 3 weeks, which was not an option for us. Cal Vanlines did show up on time for pick up. The pick up went fairly smoothly, as I thought at the time. However, I discovered later that the quality of the packing was atrocious. We had the movers pack 6 boxes of dishes, china, vases and ceramics. We paid for dishpacks and for packing; the movers showed up with UHaul boxes. Cal Vanlines hires random people at different locations to do the loading and packing! The day before the scheduled delivery, I got a call from Cal Vanlines saying that we need to pay an extra $450 because the street does not allow trucks over 7 tons and I need to pay extra because they have to transfer to a smaller truck. I tried to say that the address of delivery has been known for a long time, and at the time I signed the contract. They said I need to pay for my stuff to get delivered!!! Blackmail! The delivery was supposed to take place between 12 and 4 in the afternoon. The movers did not show up until 5:15 in the afternoon, causing us stress. The driver was rude on the phone. The delivery process was generally ok. There were 2 delivery people - the driver and another person. The boxes packed by the movers arrived smooshed, indicating inadequate packing, inadequate protection and lack of proper handling during the move.These boxes had numerous damaged items. As we were unpacking, we realized what an awful job the movers did. There were fragile items packed together with no packaging in between. The boxes were smooshed - see photo of what the boxes with dishes looked like. Do you want your china to arrive in a box that looks like this? We had broken plates, cups, pitchers and 3 large bowls that were inadequately and carelessly packed at the bottom of the box with lots of other items on top of them. Overall, stay away from Cal Vanlines. And I would make sure that the company you hire does not subcontract the job like American Van lines did. Roughly a week before our pick-up window we received an email saying that our move was now going to be handled by a "local agent", which we later learned would be "Re Moving America". We discovered so many of the the glowing reviews found for this "Re Moving America" were obviously fake and simply copied from other moving businesses's testimonials and reviews near verbatim. An overwhelming amount of the reviews on the Facebook page are written by glaringly fake accounts with zero activity beyond than that coincidentally adding their profile photos within the same 3-4 month time. The only seemingly legitimate profiles on the page are people sharing experiences that sounded like a nightmare (multiple claims of theft, police reports being filed, etc.) The fact that American Van Lines is okay partnering with an outfit that relies on deceptive and illegal practices is concerning. They are either complicit or grossly negligent when vetting who they farm their services out to. To add to this, there was zero indication that American Van Lines would pawn our move off to another company when we gave them our deposit. Nobody reached out to run it by us prior to subcontracting our move. The thought of having our belongings being held (or stolen) by such a shady outfit sounds terrifying but thankfully we were able to call and have the job cancelled. This was our first long-distance move, so we trusted what your representatives were telling us. The first red flag started with not knowing you subcontracted the move and were informed after we made the payment. Second, the packers arrived in a much smaller truck than we had been told the movers would be using, causing them have to come out a second time to pack the rest. We were then charged for a second pick up for the larger furniture items, which they did not pack/wrap properly, and ended up damaging. It was now late in the evening and dark out, with the overs asking us to sign here, initial there... Unable to clearly read everything in detail, we again trusted your company based on reputation. We trusted your company, signed the paperwork, and entrusted your company with our move. The packing supervisor never gave us copies of the paperwork we signed, which created more problems later. This was a big mistake and ended up hurting us in the end. When we received our property on the other end, we noticed the marking system was disorganized, and it was impossible to verify we had received everything. There was the problem of getting our items delivered promptly. No calls to us providing any updates or what the status of a delivery date or where our property was. We called several times and spoke to Rita Orelhomme, telling us she was busy and assured us she would do, but we never received a single call. After a month of waiting, we finally had a date when they would deliver our property. We received our property and the original paperwork we had signed, but there were more issues. Thirdly we received crushed boxes, unwrapped items, broken items, and items not belonging to us (Which we gave back to the movers.) and missing furniture. We received damaged antiques that are irreplaceable. We called several times and spoke to Rita Orelhomme, telling us she was busy and assured us she would do, but we never received a single call. After a month of waiting, we finally had a date when they would deliver our property. We received our property and the original paperwork we had signed, but there were more issues. Thirdly we received crushed boxes, unwrapped items, broken items, and items not belonging to us (Which we gave back to the movers.) and missing furniture. We received damaged antiques that are irreplaceable. After the truck was completely unloaded, we discovered it was only a partial delivery and the movers informed us they were unaware of a second delivery. We again called Rita Orelhomme to inform her of the incomplete and damaged delivery. She responded by informing us we would need to file a claim listing all the missing and damaged items. We asked to speak to someone else in charge and she refused to forward our concerns to anyone else telling us we just needed to file the claim. When we asked if we could speak to someone else, and again, her response was no, we just needed to file a claim, and she would provide the form. This was an extremely stressful time, and having your business representative tell us to just file a claim is beyond professional and insensitive. AVL started out with a detailed and great quote but ended up giving terrible service and charging me 1 1/2 times more than their quote. They couldn't tell me which day the moving truck would arrive until less than 24 hrs before it did arrive. Then they told me a date for delivery and then were 2 weeks off from the actual date. When they called on a Fri to tell me my stuff would arrive Sun they gave me 6 hrs to pre-pay the $10,000 (the balance of the new quote). I was not at home and didn't have the access I needed to funds so had to stress and scramble for a company that hadn't even bothered to give me a reasonable estimate of times and cost. I will NEVER use this company again and I'm urging friends who are moving to stay clear. Moving is stressful enough without dealing with a disorganized and overpriced moving company. Update 6 mos later, this is the Rest of the Story They: *Lost ALL the hardware for ALL my furniture so nothing could be put together on arrival. Took 3 mos before they agreed to pay a handyman. *Charged me over $200 to move a washer/dryer which they didn’t move. I couldn’t prove it wasn’t moved so I had to pay *They packed my piano standing on its end, warping the front panel *TWICE, the loading ramp dropped to the ground with a full hand truck of my boxes, spilling them from a height of 4ft. And beware, they pay $0.60/lb for damaged goods so no matter the value of the contents of those boxes, they reimburse by the pound. *To get reimbursed is so complicated it’s not worth doing at $0.60, which is I’m sure their aim *And finally, it’s VERY hard to contact this company. They have circular phone prompts - press 1 for a dept, press 1 again to speak to someone, takes you back to press 1 for a dept. Live phone answers are rarely available and if they are there’s a queue of 20-50 mins. It’s always some other dept’s responsibility. No one returns messages. Transfers are dropped and you have to start over in the queue. They say they’ll get back to you but don’t. When you get a live person who says they’ll take care of a problem it can be weeks until you hear back and then only if you call them (and wait in the queue). One positive: they delivered my stuff within their 3 wk delivery window. I would rent a UHAUL and move myself rather that ever use this company again. FURTHER UPDATE: Within a day of posting my UPDATE, a spokesman from AVL called me and after some back and forth we agreed on a settlement. I am now updating my 1 Star to a 3 Star review. I was charged $7,100 for a 300 mile move for a one bedroom apartment. AVL never told me my pickup or drop off dates, the sub contractor told me the day before pickup. They misrepresented the shuttle service, delayed my delivery date, and the sub contractor charged me $125 in tolls when there are no toll roads between my pickup and destination. The shuttle was shared with another shippers items, and it was just a moving van and a 9x12 trailer. They actually delivered my stuff with the shuttle too, not the 18 wheelers they claim. They are also ignoring my claim request and its hard to sue them because you must do so out of Florida. I suggest all negative reviewers file a complaint with Florida Attorney General (where they are based) and mover fraud division with Department of Transportation. American Van lines sub contracted my move out (they are a carrier and a broker as I found out after I booked with them). -Communication completely dropped off once they had my deposit. They never informed me of my pickup or drop off dates and failed to give the sub contractor my final inventory list. - My total move cost approximately $7,100 for (300 miles) one bedroom 700sq ft apartment. Note, I have no friends or family available to help me move in Chicago, otherwise I would have done this -I had to pay the sub contractor or he could put my stuff in a storage facility and I would be charged storage fees too. He wouldn’t allow me to waive the $125 toll fee charge despite there being no toll roads between Chicago and St Louis - almost every piece of furniture And item I have is broken or damaged because it was packed into a “shuttle” that was not accommodating -the “shuttle” delivered by items, not a larger truck as they originally informed me -for those of you with issues, file a complaint with the State Attorney General Office in Florida (their base) as well as the Department of Transportation, look for mover fraud complaint. I called Brian and he came to our home and prepared a very detailed proposal for our move from SE Florida to NE Florida. Aside from a fair price for a major move, the estimate provided to me by Brian was spot on. The move took place exactly as I was told and it would be a four hour drive. So on the day of the move it took a crew of three, six hours to load up our two-story home of 21 years onto a truck, and another hour loading up more furniture from a storage unit I had on a second floor of a Life Storage unit also onto the truck. For starters I would say that if could give this company a "Terrible" rating I would. If you need and expect a friendly customer service experience, by all means: TAKE YOU BUSINESS ELSEWHERE! This has been by far the worst moving experiences I've ever had. As a military veteran, I've made several CONUS and OCONUS moves - I'm intimately familiar with the moving process. I began this process with a call to AVL after google searches rendered that they had excellence to ratings. I quickly found this to be untrue. After speaking with the customer service representative and detailing explicitly the contents that I would need moved, a shipping estimate was forwarded to me for my review. This shipping estimate was just that - meaning that details as to what was in my kitchen and closets, for instance, were not provided (I didn't detail that I had 5 forks and knives but just that I had forks and knives). The estimate considered only the amount of boxes that would be used. Each item with these rooms were estimated to fit within the amount of boxes purchased from AVL in support of my move. It is needless to continue in the vain I'm an attempt to speak to what countless reviewers have captured below. I will just anchor of these facts. 1. The crew did not arrive during their initial 3-hour communicated window of arrival. AVL did not communicate this to me. I had to reach out to a customer service representative who informed me that the crew was "running behind schedule". 3. I was subsequently given a revised window of arrival. The crew failed to show up within that communicated window of arrival. 4. Once the crew finally showed up, 6pm PST, I couldn't have been more disappointed in their lack of overall professionalism. I was told that items (a trash can, a broom, a small kitchen appliance, a table, an ornamental elephant, etc..) were not explicitly captured within the agreed upon inventory list and that it would cost me an additional $1900.00 to add these items. I refused to sign this revised estimate as it would legally binding. The evening of their arrival at 6PM PST they attempted to work and at 8:30PM PST I advised them that I would need them to come back as I needed to rest. I communicated to the crew that 9-10AM PST would be the best time for them to arrive and continue - they agreed. At 7:46AM, I received a call asking if i was ready for them to which I once again called customer service. I needed to ensure that my concerns over the cost increase was taken care of that the crew understood the assignment. Customer service was of very little help. I could go on and on about an evolution that ended up taking 48hrs. I honestly believe that this company is in the "money grabbing" business. Not only were items not taken but I was not even given copies of the signed documents detailing anything about the shipment (the crew lied and said that these documents were left). I only found out that the crew departed after sitting in my place waiting for them to return while simultaneously speaking to a manager at AVL - they left my items behind and two (2) boxes which I paid for but they refused to fill. At the end of the night they said they had everything packed and were done, however, the next day I would find out they had missed a whole cabinet and a drawer full of kitchen items! We paid for professional packing (including materials) of our kitchen, bar area and wardrobes and art pieces - we received slipshod and negligent packing and did not receive even close to all the all boxes we paid for them to supply. Additionally, we are missing a small end table and there is damage on a number of items (from dirt stain across the bottom of a sofa to numerous nicks and scratches that were not on these pieces when the movers came to pack. Another surprise was the debris that was left on our driveway when the moving van arrived (see photo). The driver told us it would be gone the next day (the closing was the day after) - it never happened. I had to pay our garbage collectors to remove it. Similar to a number of other complaints that I've seen about this company, they failed to properly inventory our house. A horrible moving experience with this company that we massively regret and that cost us thousands of dollars. The quality of the service provided was significantly lacking, many items were broken or damaged (see photos), our items were late in being delivered, and the movers left trash and broken glass at our front door. Our move was contracted our to a third party (a clear reason why was never given). The delivery of our items was facilitated by one man who actually worked for the third party contracted by AVL, with three day workers he had picked up locally, and in a U-Haul. Is this what we paid thousands of dollars for? Their handling of our belongings was careless, and there were many broken and damaged items. One of the reasons we chose AVL was that they were rated highly for up front pricing, this was not our experience. Our final amount was almost double our original binding estimate. We were provided a three-day window for our packing and move date (5/19-5/21), and were told the actual day would be confirmed on either 5/17 or 5/18. By noon of 5/18, nobody had contacted us. I called and was unable to reach anyone so had to leave a voicemail. More than one hour later our moving coordinator from AVL returned my call and informed me our movers would arrive on 5/19 between 12-4 PM. At approx. 8 PM on 5/18, someone from the third party contractor calls me to inform me that the pick up won't be the next day (5/19) and that AVL made a mistake. Total scam behavior. Be warned. You might be flying back to wherever to get your stuff. We moved from Wisconsin to Texas last summer. They took a bid over the phone, and gave us a cost of roughly $10,000. They showed up 6 hours late without explanation. They had also hired 2 guys to help pack and load us. These men were unpaid by this company. We paid an additional $2,000 for them to pack our house. They didn't even finish that. They packed picture frames that we put in boxes so they would all be I. One place by taking an empty diaper box we had in the house, making a makeshift lid with tape, and threw that on the truck. They also packed things like empty crates on their sides inside of boxes just to fill space, or put large boxes that were already packed inside larger boxes, or simply left 4-6 cubic feet of empty air in a box. It made no sense at all. It wasn't as if that was just the last box. Many boxes were packed with virtually nothing in them. They insisted on an additional $3,000 to get all of our stuff (they brought a half full truck to our move already). We'd told them we would need the whole truck. We paid it, and they encouraged us to start driving so we would beat them to our new house but assured us that they would get it all. They didn't. Upon their arrival, well after expected, they told us they didn't get it all and would need to process a whole new truck request to get the rest and that it would take at least a 28 foot truck to do so, but none were available up there. We refused to pay any more. They asked for another $13,000. I flew back to Wisconsin the following Monday for $150, rented a 28 foot Penske with no trouble for $1,700, loaded it tightly, and had 12 feet to spare. If they had packed our first truck we would have made it. Instead, they loaded the last 10 feet of their much taller truck with the leftover moving supplies they didn't use on our house. Our move from Virginia to Ark was subcontracted out from American Van Lines to Boost Express Van Lines out of Brooklyn, NY. All were Ukranians many of whom were rude and rushed. Almost every box marked "Fragile' had broken glassware. Even an old butter churn they packed was broken in several pieces. Small pieces of furniture were broken. A rocking chair and a tv console worth several hundred dollars never showed up. Boxes of clothes on hangers were crushed and even plastic tubs were smushed and broken. UPDATE: After American Van Lines became aware of this review they called me multiple times. They offered me $500 due to my dissatisfaction. The catch - if I took the money I would have to sign a contract stating this was an "amicable resolution" and therefore I'd be forced to take this Yelp review down. Needless to say, $500 wasn't worth compromising my ethics. I want to keep this Yelp review up to warn others. RUN AWAY FROM THESE MOVERS. I have never in my life wrote a review on Yelp, but I feel like I must warn others about this company. I would give 0 stars if I could. Having to relocate to NYC during Covid is stressful enough, yet American Van Lines made everything infinitely worse. American Van Lines stated that I must be in my home 2-21 days after my move in date. Knowing the state of the world, I expected the move to take a bit longer than usual. After 14 days of sleeping on an air mattress, having to order takeout, and attempting to work from home with no furniture I called American Van Lines to get an update. I was told my items were in storage and had not been dispatched. I continue to follow up that week and I got the same answer, no it hasn't been dispatched. At this point I was on day 19 and it has still not been dispatched (my items were coming from across the country). Day 20 rolls around, and surprise, it still hadn't been dispatched. I get a call at 7 PM on Day 20 that it had finally been dispatched and it would arrive the next day (a Sunday) at 7 PM. I also learned that my items were coming from North Carolina (a state completely different from where I was moving from). On Sunday I call American Van Lines to confirm that the items were still coming. They assured me, yes, they were still coming today at 7 PM. They then proceeded to tell me that I needed to pay the rest of my statement otherwise my items couldn't get unloaded of the truck. Fine, but what if I had never called them? They completely failed to communicate this process to me. It's now 7 PM on a Sunday. Keep in mind, I have work the next day. I'm sure you see where this story is going....the movers had not arrived. 8 PM, the movers were still not here. 9 PM, no moving truck. Finally at 9:30 PM on a Sunday the movers come. It goes without saying that movers coming at 9 PM on a Sunday is inappropriate. On top of that, the movers were also highly unprofessional. During times of Covid, they were wearing masks underneath their noses. They asked for glasses and ice for their soda (which is ironic, because I don't have glasses to offer them). The first words I hear from the movers is "do you know about the damage?". No, I hadn't heard about the damage. As you can see from my photos, my desk, lamp and tv stand were ruined. Imagine working from home for an entire month without a proper setup only to learn you have to wait to order another desk (which are back ordered during Covid). At this point, I'm exhausted and just happy my stuff finally arrived. A few days later, I go to file a claim for my items. I find out I'll hear back about my claim in 120 days (wonderful). Today, 3 months later, I get a letter in the mail. My claim has been denied. I don't care about the money at this point. I am glad this absolute nightmare is behind me. I feel like a fool for not reading the Yelp reviews before I hired them. Don't be like me. Take the bad reviews seriously. American Van Lines talks a good game, with their website showing photos of their fleet of trucks with their logo and smiling employees in crisp polo shirts. They boast of "Certified packing experts to ensure your belongings are always safely packed and stowed away." What they DON'T mention is that they will subcontract to a third party to move your goods. In our case it was a company called "Move For Less," and our team of "experts" consisted of a guy in a leased, unmarked box truck and two day laborers he had picked up that day and had never worked with before. Their "moving skills" consisted solely of the ability to move boxes from Point A to Point B. They: * Did not have paper or plastic to protect our new carpet and hardwood floors * Balked at wearing masks and eventually discarded them, putting myself and my wife at risk * Refused to wear shoe covers our neighbor offered them At the origin end, Move For Less didn't not label any of the boxes. As a result, we had no idea what was inside each box. The guys at the delivery end therefore haphazardly stacked everything from floor to ceiling at random. Our sofa was left standing on end. Due to their lack of moving experience and incompetence, they put a six foot groove in our hardwood floors. I am 63 years old and my wife is 68. We both have lower back conditions, and are limited in heavy lifting. We now have to hire a reputable local moving company to sort out this mess. As of this writing, we've opened roughly 25% of the boxes to find that the "expert packers" dumped shoes at the bottom of wardrobe boxes. They used the wardrobe boxes for cheap T-shirts, yet crammed our very expensive suit coats and leather jackets into a small box along with steel pans! As a result, all of our fine dress coats are a wrinkled mess. The real nightmare is that with 75% of the boxes remaining to be unpacked, what hidden damages are waiting to be discovered?? DO NOT LET THESE PEOPLE ANYWHERE NEAR YOUR HOME. American Van Lines talks a good game, with their website showing photos of their fleet of trucks with their logo and smiling employees in crisp polo shirts. They boast of "Certified packing experts to ensure your belongings are always safely packed and stowed away." What they DON'T mention is that they will subcontract to a third party to move your goods. In our case it was a company called "Move For Less," and our team of "experts" consisted of a guy in a leased, unmarked box truck and two day laborers he had picked up that day and had never worked with before. Their "moving skills" consisted solely of the ability to move boxes from Point A to Point B. They: * Did not have paper or plastic to protect our new carpet and hardwood floors * Balked at wearing masks and eventually discarded them, putting myself and my wife at risk * Refused to wear shoe covers our neighbor offered them At the origin end, Move For Less didn't not label any of the boxes. Don’t believe the biased high ratings for American Van Lines (AVL) seen online. AVL buys people’s silence if not 100% satisfied. To accept their “settlement offer”, you sign a contract saying you won’t say anything negative about the company. AVL caused over $8000 worth of damage to our belongings (not counting damage done to either house) for which they offered a settlement of $1483. The movers’ attitude was great. Whenever I tried to help box items or carry items to the truck, AVL repeatedly informed me that I paid them to do the work and I shouldn’t be doing anything. But one worker clogged our toilet. Rather than saying anything about it, he closed the door. I found the mess 2 DAYS later. I had to purchase another plunger to unclog the toilet. Also, items were not packed carefully (e.g., 1 sheet of paper between 2 glass pie pans). I was expecting an 18-wheeler to carry our belongings like we had before. AVL showed up with a small truck, realized not everything was going to fit, and rented a trailer to pull behind the truck. AVL strapped my grill, wagon, & plow to the outside of the trailer (they wouldn’t fit inside). I rented a trailer to carry what AVL couldn’t fit. Our belongings were emptied into AVL’s storage unit, then reloaded when we were ready for delivery. The day we closed on the house, AVL called to make arrangements; dispatch gave me a delivery window of 2:00-4:00pm. I told them that we wouldn’t be closing until after 1:00. AVL arrived at the house at 11:00am. The driver chewed me out because I wasn’t there to take delivery and if I wasn’t there by 2:00, he was going to charge me a waiting fee. I arrived at 1:45. AVL wasn’t there, and didn’t return until after 4:00. I told my wife what happened. She posted a bad review on Google. Within 2 hours, Theresa (caseworker) called me and said if we removed the post, AVL would give me $200. The post was removed, but I never saw the $200. She told us we had 90 days to file damage and loss claims. Just a few weeks ago (way too late to add to the claim), I discovered that my 2 sets of handcuffs & keys were stolen. I repeatedly told them to take extra care of some items due to their sentimental or intrinsic value. Several were damaged. Not expecting that much damage, I foolishly signed Option 2 of the contract, which waves full replacement cost. It allows for replacement cost of $0.60/pound of that item. AVL’s settlement offer for some items was $508. Because the damage to the house was not noted in the log when the movers were here, AVL only allowed $725 as a “courtesy allowance” because I had pictures. There was a long list of other items that AVL did not offer fair settlement because their damage or loss was not listed on the bill of laden. As the homeowner, apparently it’s my responsibility to assess loss or damage to EVERYTHING as it’s unloaded. I guess I was supposed to go through every box while the truck was being unloaded to check for damage, but had 90 days to submit the paperwork? There was a 5-man team unloading items and entering the house through 2 entrances, some boxes and items were left in the garage. I could not keep track of everything. AVL used a $200 rain barrel as a packing vessel. It was filled with tools, then a chain was taken out of a tool box and thrown on top of the tools. The weight and sharp angles wore a hole in bottom, which wasn’t discover until I emptied it. A wood cabinet was destroyed. AVL put it in the garage and buried it with boxes so that I couldn’t see it. Out of “good faith and customer service”, AVL offered a settlement of $250 for the items damaged or lost that were not listed on the bill of laden because of the photos. As per their agreement, AVL had 120 days to respond to that claim. After 121 days I called them. For me to accept their pitiful offer of $1483, I must promise that I “will not, directly or indirectly, make any negative or disparaging statements”. Used this company because of the ratings. From the start Tim was great to deal with on the phone. Gave me a flat rate quote even followed up with me. The day of the move they showed when they said they would. The funny thing was it was the same guy that moved me into my place a year and a half before (Eddie) he even remembered me and my neighbor's dogs. Eddie and his partner who went by the name "Showtime" we're professional in every way. They wrapped everything before they loaded it, even though I told them I was going to get rid of some stuff later on after the move, but they said they had to.
